Basic Engagement Photo Ideas

By: Tulsa Wedding Photographer

Jake Aldrich

In Tulsa wedding photography, the actual wedding is typically just one part of the wedding photography experience. Don’t forget about engagement and bridal photos! A lot of times, a newly engaged couple will know they want at least engagement photos, but in terms of the actual engagement photo shoot itself, have absolutely no idea of what they want and how they want it. Some basic engagement photo ideas can be dug up by asking few questions.

  • Are engagement photos really required?

These days, engagement photos are almost a must. They are a perfect compliment to the actual wedding photos, and seem to be woven into the tradition of the path for a modern day wedding. One question to ask yourself is, what can you use the pictures for? For instance, a sign-in book that also displays engagement photos can be a very fun way for your guests to join in on the wedding experience, that may prove more of a keepsake than just a book with signatures. Many people like to use the engagement photos on display at the actual reception as a decoration. Even further, they can be used for “save the date” invitations that precede the actual formal invitation for your guests. There are many more uses for engagement or bridal shots (like for sharing with family members) but deciding what you want to do with your photos can be important.

  • Prints or Digital?

Engagement is relatively a low-profile affair compared to the wedding. You will get any format you want, print or digital, or even both; but have you thought of proper way of utilizing that format? Prints can be shared with family members or for other uses (as mentioned earlier) and digital versions can be shared electronically (via e-mail, social network sites like facebook, etc.) which can make your chore of sharing al of your photos more efficient, and cheap!

  • What type of style should you use?

People may want their engagement photos in conventional style, candid style, or some modern type of style. In case of unique styles, one has to consider what kind of style you want to look back on as a memory of the moment, but also, what kinds of relatives he/she has. Some very creative styles style can be difficult for some people to understand and appreciate, but can also be the most fun. It depends on your taste!

Engagement photography is usually done few months before the actual wedding. At the same time, engagement photos can be used as a dry run for testing out a photographer’s style to decide whether they should consider him for wedding photography as well.

  • Can you really afford engagement photos?

While cost is always a thought when it comes to the wedding plans and budget, because of the myriad of functions the photos provide, many find their engagement photos priceless.

Tips For  the Hobbyist Wedding Photographer

By: Tulsa Wedding Photographer

Jake Aldrich

Even though a wedding is something that is a once-in-a-lifetime event, and the requirement of the perfect wedding photography and the experienced and skilled wedding photographer responsible for freezing these wonderful moments is very intense, how can someone stop an ‘enthusiastic’ brother of a bride or loving sister of the groom from doing this task themselves? Sometimes, because of budget concerns, a friend of the family is the only option. These tips can prove to be handy for them, so that their fervor and hobby will be functioning in the right way and your wedding pictures will not be a certain regret to look at. Let’s see what they can do.

  • Shot List: Keep the list of shots (wedding photos) that the couple would like to have. These shots would be treated as ‘must’, the rest are added advantage.
  • Photo Coordinator: Guests run haywire during the ceremony. One coordinating family-member will be responsible for arranging everyone at the wedding photo-shoot and help you get pictures with least time-waste and fatigue.
  • Location Exploration: Visit the venue and short-list certain locations where you think you would want to shoot wedding photos.
  • Precautions: Anything weather wise can go wrong during Tulsa wedding photography… just make sure to have back-up plans in such incidences, like weather-change, battery loss, memory card full, etc.
  • Consult With The Couple: Know what and how the wedding couple wants when it comes to their photography.
  • Small Details: Make sure to shoot minute details like rings, shoes, flowers, table settings, menus, back side of dresses.
  • Two Cameras: Do anything that you can think of to get an extra camera for the day, and set both up separately with ‘wide angle lens’ and ‘longer lens.
  • An Assistant: Request your friend or relative to be your aide for the day. It will divide your efforts, fatigue, and frustration 50-50.
  • Right Attitude: Think ahead to get in the right position at the right moment with perfect timing. Freezing key moments in your camera is important, and so is the need to not to disturb/spoil them. Be bold, but not flashy.
  • Diffusing Light: Churches will either allow flash wedding photography or they won’t. So, you have to decide how will you find the deem lighting in the church. Flash, if allowed, can bounce back adding colored cast to the picture. If flashes are not allowed, you should either use fast-lens at wide apertures or bump up the ISO.
  • Display: Digital technology has made everything ‘instant’. Editing should be done ASAP, and then displayed online for all of the guests to see. This will also aid the newly married couple in re-living their blur of a wedding day, without having to carry all of their photos on a trek around the city, so their friends can see too.

These are a few guide-lines for them, considering their ‘amateurish’ status, that we hope can help you not spoil the photos and miss the most important moments of one of the biggest day in someone’s life. If you are the amateur photographer, and you have a wedding coming up soon, consider taking classes as well, to ensure you are ready for the big day.

Helpful tips for the Wedding photographer

By: Tulsa Wedding Photographer

Jake Aldrich

Successful and professional Tulsa wedding photographers are mostly those who have prepared for the big day in advance and not on the day itself. Just like a student in school prepares for a test in advance and not during the few days before. The more prepared, the better ensured is the wedding photographer of capturing all those candid moments always on alert getting an all encompassing essence of the celebrations.

Be certain to be available to meet the couple more than just the initial meeting and on the day of the wedding. With every meeting introduce ideas and thoughts you have regarding the atmosphere and type of photos you are looking to take. Since you are a professional, you can suggest a few ideas, and integrate them into your client’s ideas as well.

Wedding photography is a key facet to marriages and their celebrations in weddings.

Perhaps one of the more important points to capturing wedding photos is getting pictures of the key people at the party. A helpful tip would be to get a list from the couple of the important people they would definitely like pictures of, this way you ensure to make everyone happy. If a “shot sheet”  is not an available option for whatever reason, have the bridal couple assign someone to point out those important people at the celebration. A liaison will help identify those people who can’t be missed at all, while helping you spot those who matter and aren’t on the list as well. The family and friends who are important to the couple, and have potentially traveled from long distances, certainly need to be included in the photos as a way to remember the evening, and having a shot sheet or a liason are two ways to ensure this happens.

For outdoor weddings surrounded by scenic beauty and nature in all her glory, and picking a scenic location as a background to your photos is important. Plan out the event according to the schedule desired by the bride. Being prepared and ready will help eliminate several last minute surprises that would otherwise throw you off your game. Picking time of day and if you’d like to shoot in natural or artificial light is also an important point to consider. Given the background you’ve selected, the next thing to think on is the sunlight, clutter and placement of people in the photo and other related issues you might come across.

For indoor weddings, having proper lighting is the biggest key. Consider what kind of flash and lighting devices you will need to get all the most important shots look good, even in low light situations.

One of the main rules to wedding photography, and weddings in general, is to be prepared for the unexpected. It is almost absolutely a given that something will go wrong, especially at weddings. Keep in mind to always be on the alert and ready to shoot pictures, of things interesting, amiss, and those perfect. These candid moments are what makes a wedding and what lives on forever through photographs.

Engagement Photos Tips

By: Tulsa Wedding Photographer

Jake Aldrich

Are you nervous about your engagement pictures? What to wear, what do I even want to look like, etc? Listed below is some great advice to have you feeling more comfortable with the whole experience.

1. Clothing: What do you want your pictures to look like? Are you a casual person? Then jeans and a nice shirt will do. But maybe you want them more dressy? We have suggestions for those below. It’s important to  try and bring out your personality with your clothing. You can always bring a change of clothing as a backup option, too.

2. Dress Clothing for the fellas: Either a polo shirt, button down, or a sweater because they look sharp whether you’re wearing jeans or dress pants. Guys need to wear at least casual dress shoes, sneakers usually look tacky.
3. Dress Clothing for the ladies: Beware too much cleavage! Wear clothes that you feel comfortable in, and you like the way you look in.
4. Shoes: For Tulsa engagement photography wear something comfortable, as typically you will walk to different locations and background. Ladies, if you want to wear heels, bring a pair of flip flops to walk around in, and slip on the heels before the next shot takes place.
5. Make up: Even if you do not typically wear a lot of makeup, it is a good idea to bring makeup and wear some powder at least. This will help reduce any shininess you may get from a camera flash, especially if it is warm enough outside to make your skin glisten (that’s a subtle way of saying you are sweating)

6. When it comes to Tulsa Engagement Photographers, Accessories can turn a average outfit into something that fits your personality perfectly, and is uniquely you. If there is anything that you and your fiancé share, such as a love for the same baseball team, then team related gear may be a fun way to share some of your pictures.

7. At first, most of your shots will feel forced, and you may feel awkward. Just relax! The more natural you feel, the easier the shoot will be, and the better the pictures will turn out.  Good Tulsa Engagement photographers not only take good pictures, but get their subject feeling comfortable as well.
8. Along the same lines as the accessories, the more personality that you bring to the shoot, the more the pictures will seem like the real you. If you have props, or specific favorite shots you want to recreate, bring those in mind. The shoot is supposed to be a completely fun experience that you eventually walk away with some fantastic pictures that you are really proud of.

Surviving the wedding shoot

By: Tulsa Wedding Photographer

Jake Aldrich

In Tulsa, wedding photography requires scrupulous attentions to all the intricacies of the wedding day… the dresses, the people… with high tensions, tight schedules, and charged emotions, Tulsa wedding photography tests your absolute vigor as a wedding photographer. It leaves no scope for you to test your ‘people skills’ or ‘your experiments with portraits’; but it demands you to practice everything you have ever learned.

There are a few basics that are needed to go about capturing beautiful shots in unpredictable and varied settings. With a little bit of hard work, following tips will help one cover essential preparations for a successful wedding shoot.

  • Style: Wedding couple must have some views as to how they would want their wedding photo album should appear, i.e. conventional or candid. Try to figure out with a proper communication with them.
  • Bridal Photos: Pre-wedding bridal photos should include wedding preparations, bridal portraits, bride with the groom, outdoor-indoor, etc.
  • Staying Connected: Have contact numbers of key people like the groom, the bride, wedding coordinator, the best man, the bridesmaid, and bride’s personal attendant.
  • Assistance: For any wedding photography having an assistant or a primary shooter helps a great deal. They are like assistant directors, who will keep track of the shots list, manage the people (especially for group wedding photos), carry equipments, keeping track of the mobile phones, or holding reflectors.
  • Shots-List: The bridal couple will undoubtedly have their preferred shots. Generally, the couple will stress the importance of wedding photos with family members, relatives, and friends. Once you have this initial list, you can build a more detailed list for your own reference. A shot list will keep you focused as you go about the 5-8 hour shooting day. If you keep referring to your shot list throughout the day, you won’t have to worry about forgetting anything.
  • Locations: Wedding photography requires a wedding photographer to be present at the venue at least an hour before the wedding ceremony commences. Utilize this time to comb out all the locations where you might want to take wedding photos.
  • Be A Sport: Wedding day is one huge day with a huge crowd, scheduled ceremonies, people’s excitement/boredom/restlessness… many things can fail to go as anticipated. It is of utmost importance to ‘already expect’ these things and keep calm during the wedding photography.

Beginner’s Guide For Understanding Your Wedding Photography Needs

By: Tulsa Wedding Photographer

Jake Aldrich

There are certain key elements that you can focus upon when trying to understand successful wedding photography.

Preparation

Keep in mind that Tulsa wedding photography preparation doesn’t start the previous night of the wedding, but it starts several months prior to it. Tulsa wedding photography is looked at as a highly professional and responsible profession, and in order to establish what fits you best, you might want to ask yourself following questions,

  • How many photographers do you need? (2 or more are usually needed to get all of the reaction shots you may desire, 1 will be able to get all of the major events)
  • What wedding photo style is required, traditional, candid, or modern?
  • How many guests are there? Are they mostly relatives or friends? Do you want a lot of group photos with these people in them, or just the main ones (like bride and groom, bridal party, etc.)
  • Which location will be used? Will there be a reception or a dinner? Will the photographer be there long enough to capture all of the events and moments you want to be captured, or will they leave at a predetermined time?

Locations, Events, and Time

Plan out the event so that there are no schedule conflicts the day of. Now, not everything goes according to plan of course, but having a general outline of the day will calm your nerves. You will undoubtedly feel more at ease if everyone is on the same page. A shot sheet is good to have as well, as it can prepare you for all of the shots you will want to have, but may not remember to ask for during the big day.

The Photographers gear:

It is a good idea to ensure the photographer has all the gear needed reserved for your shoot and your shoot alone. These gear items may include:

  • Back-ups

Cameras: It’s always good to have extra camera’s should the main one malfunction.

Camera lenses and filters: Same as above, to ensure nothing goes wrong.

Tripod: This is important for indoor shots and other low lights.

Assistant: Will there be a second photographer, or at least an assistant? An additional human will certainly make the photography experience flow much smoother.

  • Photo presentation:  How do you want your photos presented? Online for everyone to be able to view easily, or do you want to order all of your own physical prints, to hang in your house.

3 Stages Of Wedding Photography Preparation

By: Tulsa Wedding Photographer

Jake Aldrich

The failure to prepare, is preparation to fail. – John Wooden

While this may have been applied to basketball at the time of the quote, this principle applies to many important things in life, including wedding photography.

This preparation for the wedding day can be followed in three steps. Treat them like wedding rehearsals. Let’s see how.

A Few Months Before

A few months before the actual wedding, a tulsa wedding photographer should

try and do a planning ‘run through’ with the wedding couple, and plan out the day. You may not have all the details chosen yet, but it is a good starting point to get things narrowed down. An experienced photographer can also help you with ideas that you may not have thought of, and details to consider.

Another thing to potentially plan for is a “photo-run-through” aka, engagement photos. As a photographer, you get to know the couple even further, learn about their personalities, and get them ready for feeling comfortable when posing for pictures. Besides these advantages, you get the opportunity to discuss style with the wedding couple, and inquire more intricate details they would want to incorporate in their wedding photos.

You can also use this time (either in addition to, or in place of) to do bridal portraits. Usually featuring the bride and her dress, many times at the place of the ceremony (or at another scenic location) the bridal portraits offer the bride a chance to get some beautiful shots that she and all of her family members will want to keep, and possibly more importantly, gives the bride another excuse to be the princess if the day. Getting dolled up, hair and makeup done, and donning the dress that she plans to be married in is a great run through for the big day.

One Week Before

This is ‘making sure’ rehearsal for the wedding day, in order to ensure the same situations discussed previously are still on the list.

Most important shots like pre-ceremony and post-ceremony shots of the couple or the group shots should be planned at this time. Shot sheets that feature specific family member names can also be very helpful in organizing the day, since it is difficult to off hand remember every shot you may want, especially in the whirlwind of the day.

The Night Before

Sleep well! Your big day is ahead of you, and your photos are the last thing you will need to worry about. With the preparation you have gone through for the day, everyone should be on the same page, and you are free to enjoy your big day!
